My Weight Loss

Published by francisq at 7:41 pm under Health and Fitness Edit This

After several years of being sedentary, I finally decided that it was time to start working on being in shape. My motivation is my family.  I’m almost 50 and I want to live long enough to enjoy my kids as they get older and start to have families of their own.  Weight loss is one of those things that I have been working toward off and on over the past decade.  Before I started working at an office job back in 1999, I was always hovering around 185.  But the moment I started my current job, my weight went up to a high of 225.  So, here I am.  I hope to keep myself motivated by making this public and maybe in the process, motivate others, too.  To everyone who wants to lose weight, we’re in this thing together and together, we can and will succeed.

Let’s get started.  I actually started to work out again during the summer of 2007 when out of nowhere, I ended up with Plantar Faciitis.   What happened was my Achilles tendon tightened up on me to the point where I had to hobble around on crutches.   It got so bad that as my right foot was suffering from this, I started to walk differently on my left foot which caused it to develop Plantar Faciitis just as the right foot was getting better.  This continued for several months until I went to a podiatrist.  I was given a splint to wear at night and that helped to stretch out the tendon which eventually lead to the healing process.

Finally, this summer (2008) my tendons felt good enough to get started very slowly on the treadmill.  I started walking around  2.5 miles an hour for about 15 minutes and that was it.  As the days passed and turned into weeks, I slowly increased the speed and duration until I reached the point of walking for an hour.  In the process, I started to notice my pants were getting loose and that felt great.

As I kept walking, I started to feel better too but eventually, I reached the plateau that just about everyone reaches when they exercise.  In my next blog, I’ll address how I started to deal with this.  Until then, see ya later.
